Maggie's surgery

Our sweet baby girl had to have surgery on March 2nd. Thankfully she was in the trusted hands of surgeons and nurses at Children's Hospital in Omaha.Maggie's umbilical cord fell off early and when it did, this interesting little red bump of tissue was left sticking out. It's called an umbilical granuloma and it often will dry up on its own. The good thing was it didn't hurt her at all. It just looked weird (we likened it to a turkey timer) and oozed goo and blood occasionally, which would get all over her clothes. We were told to put alcohol on the area to help dry it up but that didn't do the trick. The next step is treating it with silver nitrate to dry it up. Well, after three attempts of that spread out over a month, they decided surgery was the next option. It was hard knowing my baby was going to be put under and operated on, but man was I tired of looking at and dealing with the granuloma.Maggie was a doll when we got up to Children's Hospital in Omaha--she smiled for the nurses and didn't cry at all until about 15 minutes before her surgery...she was hungry after being kept from eating for 4 hours! Surgery only took about 45 minutes or so. We were told it was connected to the bladder tissue. The separated it, tied off the tissue and fixed her belly button. She had a 1mm diameter hole in her belly button which scabbed over by the time we took the pressure bandages off on Friday. She slept most of Tuesday and Wednesday morning because they gave her morphine and a local anesthetic on her tummy, but she even gave us a few smiles Wednesday afternoon.
It was a tough couple days but she seemed mostly back to her old self by Friday and she's all healed up now :) I'm so glad to have that behind us!
